“Opening Act prepared me for the real world more than anything else I’ve ever done.”
Alex | Opening Act Alum (Manhattan)
Junior year was a particularly challenging time in Alex’s life. While exploring their (Alex’s chosen pronoun) gender identity without any type of supportive community or creative outlet, Alex suffered from social anxiety, depression, and academic struggles. “I never really had a place where my voice mattered, where people listened and cared about what I had to say. At Opening Act, I immediately felt like I belonged. I felt like I had power for the first time.” Alex is super proud of the work they did in Opening Act and credits the experience with not only building self-confidence and helping Alex find their passion for acting, but with transforming Alex’s world outside the Opening Act classroom. “Opening Act prepared me for the real world more than anything else I’ve ever done. It helped me figure out what I want to do. It motivated me to go to school and to graduate.” After graduating, Alex used a scholarship earned through Opening Act to study improvisation at The Peoples Improv Theater and plans to continue their performance training.
