“I was really struggling with my math class, but instead of dropping the class and giving up, I worked extra hard.”
Courtney | Opening Act Alum (Manhattan)
A year after graduating from the High School for Graphic and Communication Arts, Courtney is continuing to feel the impact of his experience at Opening Act. As a college freshman, living away from his family for the first time, Courtney was struggling to acclimate to college life. It was his Opening Act teaching artists that Courtney reached out to for support and guidance, and through them, he was reminded of the power of persistence and dedication. “Ben reminded me of what is possible when you fully commit to something. I was really struggling with my math class, but instead of dropping the class and giving up, I worked extra hard and sought out assistance from the teacher and my grades immediately improved.” Courtney believes that learning to say “yes…and” to situations (a key improvisation skill taught to every Opening Act student) “has given me the confidence that I can do anything in life, that I can take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way.” While in Opening Act, Courtney discovered a passion for expressing himself through the written word. He has channeled that love into his studies and is now majoring in English and Creative Writing at SUNY Brockport.
