Dear Opening Act Community,
As you know, measures are being taken across the nation to protect vulnerable populations from the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Opening Act is deeply committed to your safety and the health of this great city. As such, we have made the very difficult decision to cancel our 20th Anniversary Play Reading Gala on April 6th, and we need your support in helping us re-imagine how we can continue to offer life-changing opportunities to New York City’s incredible young people.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR OUR CITY’S MOST VULNERABLE YOUTH?
Though many private schools have cancelled classes or moved to a remote learning model, the New York Times recently reported that our city’s public schools are open in large part because “they double as social service centers for hundreds of thousands of poor students,” including 114,000 students who are homeless. “School may be the only place they can get three hot meals a day and medical care, and even wash their dirty laundry.”
WHY OPENING ACT?
In this vital time of need, providing continuity, hope, and safety for our students is more important than ever. In order for us to continue to YES AND our students we need you.
OUR CALL TO ACTION
Our Play Reading Gala was set to raise 25% of Opening Act’s budget, and in order to maintain our programs, we must meet that budget in spite of our inability to gather together and applaud our young people’s courage and talent on stage.
We humbly ask you to consider maintaining the same level of support you would have provided through our Play Reading, so that the work we all believe in so deeply may continue. Your donation will now be 100% tax-deductible and stands to make an even more powerful impact on our students.

With gratitude,
