Hello Opening Act Community!
Great news in the new year … Opening Act is available to more young people than ever before! Our programming is now offered (virtually) to ALL Manhattan District 79 sites!

District 79 is NYC Department of Education’s alternative school district that provides opportunities for older students whose education was disrupted by life’s challenges to receive an alternative diploma and learn tools to successfully navigate life upon completion of the program. Since 2015, Opening Act has been a key D79 partner, using our theater workshops and trauma-informed, healing-centered teaching practices to create brave, empowering spaces for D79 students to PLAY and CONNECT. Our programs continue to demonstrate a transformational impact on academic performance and self-efficacy, confidence, and empathy as well as promoting attendance and engagement during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
“Opening Act is a critical partner in our efforts to keep students connected and engaged during this crisis.”
–Marie Polinsky, Director of Student Support and Academic Services, District 79
DID YOU KNOW?
All Opening Act workshops are rooted in trauma-informed/healing-centered teaching practices. Our assets-based curriculum recognizes the impact of trauma, creates a space of physical and emotional safety, and acknowledges identity and agency as central factors in well-being – all through the lens of theater and arts education!
